December 1999
I was born in Indianapolis in the winter of 1999. I spent 5 years there before we moved.
Around 2005, my parents moved to a new house with dreams of living a secluded life. It was a five-acre wooden house built from used wood, with only one neighbor more than half a mile away. My mom especially wanted to leave the noise of city life behind and settle into a quiet rural home.
Not long after we moved in, things began to fall apart. They fought often. One day, I stood between them, tears in my eyes, with both my arms out. I cried for them to stop. What I wanted most was for them to get along.
At the time, I didn’t understand what they were fighting about. I later realized it was money.
An American who works hard shouldn’t have to worry about whether they can pay their bills.
It shouldn’t be normal to work two jobs just to get by, or to go broke over health conditions no one chose.
And it shouldn’t be normal for hard work to just end in failure.
We believe people who work hard should be successful.
That no one should go broke paying for essential healthcare.
And that a movement full of hopeful people can change their future.
And that’s how we’ll build a better tomorrow for all of us.
